“It’s tough to find a place not to like in Switzerland.”
Michele Bachmann
Known to us already that Switzerland is as beautiful as heaven, today we will ride on the most beautiful scenic views of the path from Tirano to Zermatt by Swiss Railways. You can take a train from Tirano to Zermatt via Milano Centrale and Visp which will take almost 7 hours 10 mins. But here we break the journey in two parts, from Tirano to St.Mortiz by Bernina Express then from St.Mortiz to Zermatt via Glacier Express.
So, today we will start from Tirano to explore that beautiful scenic path via Bernina railway. It is a single track 1000 mm meter gauge railway line forming of the Rhaetian Railway. It links the spa resort of St.Mortiz, in the Canton of Graübunden, Switzerland, with the town of Tirano, in the Province of Sondrino, Italy via the Bernina Pass. Reaching a height of 2,253 meters above sea level, it is the highest railway crossing in Europe and the third highest railway in Switzerland.
This beautiful pathway it allows passengers to see glaciers and palm trees on the same line.
On 7th July 2008, the Bernina Railway and the Albula Railway, which also forms part of RhB, were recorded in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
It will take almost 3 to 4 hors reaching to St.Mortiz from Tirano.
A few words regarding St.Mortiz: It is a luxury alpine resort town in Switzerland’s Engadin valley. It has hosted the Winter Olympics twice, has the Cresta Run, a world -championship bobsled run made of natural ice, and an outdoor Olympic ice rink. Its frozen lake hosts polo, cricket and even horse racing on ice. Ski and snowboard areas include Corviglia, Diavollezza, Corvatsch and there are well -groomed cross country ski trails. More over it’s a beautiful picturesque small town of Switzerland.
So, next we will travel from St.Mortiz to Zermatt via Glacier Express where we have such scenic beauties of Alpine railways. The Glacier Express (GEX) is an “express” train connecting railway stations of two major mountain resorts of Zermatt and St.Mortiz via Andermatt in the central Swiss Alps. The train is not an “express” in the sense of being a high-speed train, but rather it in the sense it provides a one seat ride for an 8 hours long end to end 291 km journey and omit stops made by local trains. The Glacier Express is known as the slowest express train in the world. As St.Mortiz and Zermatt are home to two well known mountains, the Glacier Express is also said to travel from Matterhorn to Piz Bernina.
It’s a life time experience and explorations while travelling through this beautiful scenic way via Glacier Express. On the way it used to proceed through nine stations and each one is different from the other.
So, my friends, as the meaning of life is to explore various new things, places, people, civilisations…travelling should and must be kept in your mind and when this pandemic situations are over you must keep your bag ready for such new explorations.
